π What is medical weight management?
Medical weight management focuses on reducing excess body weight in a safe, sustainable way to improve overall health. Being overweight or obese can increase the risk of conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and sleep apnea.
Treatment is individualized, not a one-size-fits-all program. A provider-guided approach goes beyond diet and exercise. It starts with a clinical evaluation of your health history, metabolic factors, and personal goals, then builds a plan that accounts for how your body actually works.
For many patients, this includes evaluation for GLP-1 medications that help reduce appetite and improve metabolic function. The goal is sustainable progress: weight reduction, better blood sugar control, reduced blood pressure, or simply more energy and mobility day to day.
Why does it feel so hard?
Weight gain and difficulty losing weight result from a combination of factors: diet, physical inactivity, genetics, hormonal influences, medications, stress, and sleep patterns. This is a medical issue, not a willpower problem.
Common contributing factors:
- Diet patterns high in processed foods and added sugar
- Physical inactivity or declining activity over time
- Genetic predisposition to weight gain
- Certain medical conditions, including hypothyroidism, that may contribute to weight change
- Medications that promote weight gain (steroids, antidepressants, some antidiabetics)
- Chronic stress and poor sleep, both of which disrupt appetite-regulating hormones
- History of yo-yo dieting or prior weight regain after loss
- Metabolic adaptation, where the body resists further weight loss over time

Treatment options
π What treatment may include
Treatment depends on your symptoms, medical history, and what your provider determines is appropriate for you. Effective weight management typically combines lifestyle changes with clinical support, and sometimes medication. Not every patient qualifies for prescription treatment, and your provider makes that determination based on your complete health picture.
- π GLP-1 Receptor Agonists GLP-1 medications help reduce appetite and improve metabolic function by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone that signals fullness and regulates blood sugar. They are prescribed when clinically appropriate based on your full evaluation and health history. Not every patient qualifies, and your provider will determine whether this approach is right for you. Clinical trials have shown meaningful weight reduction outcomes for eligible patients when combined with lifestyle changes.
- π₯ Nutrition and Lifestyle Guidance A calorie-appropriate diet emphasizing protein and whole foods, combined with regular physical activity (goal: 150 minutes per week), forms the foundation of any effective weight management plan. Medication works best when lifestyle habits support it.
- π¬ Metabolic Health Evaluation Based on your history, your provider may recommend testing such as blood sugar, cholesterol, kidney and liver function, or thyroid testing when indicated. Sometimes identifying and treating an underlying condition changes the entire picture.
- π Ongoing Monitoring and Adjustments Weight management is ongoing. Your provider monitors progress, manages side effects, adjusts dosing when applicable, and may recommend follow-up lab testing to track health markers over time. Follow-up visits are recommended every 4 weeks until results are established, then every 8 to 12 weeks for maintenance.
β οΈ Important safety information
GLP-1-based medications are not appropriate for everyone. Tell your provider if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding β GLP-1 medications are not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Also tell your provider if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), a history of pancreatitis or gallbladder disease, severe digestive conditions, diabetic eye disease, significant kidney or liver disease, or if you take insulin or other diabetes medications. Your provider screens for all contraindications before recommending treatment. Not every patient qualifies, and that is by design.
A note on compounded medications
FDA-approved prescription medications are the standard, first-line option and are appropriate for the great majority of patients. Compounded preparations are not FDA-approved and are only considered when a licensed provider determines that available FDA-approved products do not adequately meet a patient's specific clinical needs. Any decision to use a compounded preparation is made at the provider's discretion, requires documented medical necessity, and is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Start a VisitWhat to expect
ποΈ Your visit, step by step
Here is exactly what happens from the moment you start your visit to when you pick up your prescription or receive your provider's guidance on next steps.
|
1
Complete your intake
Fill out a short form about your health history, weight history, current medications, and goals. About 5 minutes. On your phone, at your desk, or from your car. |
2
Meet with your provider
You actually speak with a board-certified provider who takes the time to learn about your health history, ask follow-up questions, and understand your goals. This is a real clinical conversation, not a form review. |
3
Receive your treatment plan
Your provider explains their recommendation: prescription treatment, lifestyle guidance, labs, or a referral. No surprises. Specific to you and your situation. |
4
Pick up at your pharmacy
If prescription treatment is appropriate, it may be sent electronically to your preferred pharmacy. Medication availability and dispensing time vary. Many pharmacies also offer home delivery. |
What about ongoing care?
Weight management is a long-term commitment, not a one-time visit. Follow-up appointments are typically recommended every 4 weeks until results are established, then every 8 to 12 weeks for maintenance. Your provider monitors your weight, blood pressure, side effects, and overall progress at each visit. Gradual, consistent change is the goal.
Supporting your treatment
π What you can do between visits
Medication works best when combined with consistent lifestyle changes. Here are the evidence-based habits your provider will likely recommend, and the warning signs to watch for.
- βFollow your dietary recommendations and maintain a modest calorie deficit as guided by your provider
- βAim for at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week. Walking is a great starting point.
- βAdd strength training 2 to 3 times per week to preserve muscle mass during weight loss
- βInclude adequate protein and nutrient-dense foods based on your individualized nutrition plan.
- βLimit foods high in added sugar, sodium, and highly refined carbohydrates when appropriate.
- βStay adequately hydrated unless a healthcare provider has advised you to limit fluids.
- βPrioritize sleep. 7 to 9 hours supports hormonal balance and appetite regulation.
- βTake medication exactly as prescribed. Follow the medication-specific instructions for a missed dose rather than doubling up.
- βTrack your weight and progress over time. Gradual, consistent change is the goal.
A note on GLP-1 medications and food: Eating smaller meals, avoiding greasy or heavy foods, and staying hydrated can significantly reduce nausea and other common side effects during the first few weeks of treatment. Nausea typically improves as your body adjusts.
β οΈ Contact your provider or seek urgent care if you experience:
- Severe or persistent abdominal pain, especially pain that radiates to the back (may signal pancreatitis)
- Upper abdominal pain with fever, clay-colored stools, or yellowing of the skin or eyes (may signal gallbladder or liver disease)
- Repeated vomiting or inability to keep fluids down
- Markedly reduced urination, fainting, or confusion (signs of serious dehydration)
- Facial or throat swelling, difficulty breathing, or severe rash (signs of allergic reaction β seek emergency care immediately)
- Symptoms of low blood sugar if you take insulin or a sulfonylurea: shakiness, sweating, confusion, rapid heartbeat
- Sudden or significant vision changes if you have diabetes
- You are not seeing progress after consistently following your treatment plan
- Seek prompt help for severe depression, suicidal thoughts, or any mental health crisis, whether or not you believe it is related to your medication

Frequently asked questions
β Questions about weight management online
Straight answers to what people ask before their first visit.
Can I get GLP-1 medications prescribed online?
Yes. A licensed provider evaluates your eligibility, reviewing your health history, BMI, current medications, and individual risk factors, and determines whether a GLP-1 medication or another approach is appropriate. If it is, your provider will send a prescription to your selected pharmacy. Availability and dispensing time vary by medication and pharmacy.
Who qualifies for GLP-1 medications?
Eligibility is determined by your provider based on your full clinical picture. In general, FDA guidelines support GLP-1 use in adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher with at least one weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol. However, your full health history, contraindications, and goals all factor into the decision. Not everyone qualifies, and your provider will be straightforward with you about that.
What are the common side effects of GLP-1 medications?
The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea or constipation, decreased appetite, and stomach discomfort, especially when starting or increasing dose. These often improve over time. Eating smaller meals, avoiding greasy foods, and staying hydrated helps. GLP-1 medications also carry a warning related to thyroid tumors in people with certain personal or family history. Your provider screens for this during your evaluation.
What if GLP-1 medications are not right for me?
If your provider determines prescription treatment is not appropriate, they will explain why and outline alternatives including other FDA-approved weight support medications, metabolic evaluation, or lifestyle-based approaches. You will not be charged if we cannot complete your care online.
Can I get compounded GLP-1 medications?
FDA-approved medications are the preferred option when they meet a patient's needs. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness, or quality before they are marketed. A compounded preparation may be considered only in limited circumstances where a licensed provider identifies and documents a specific clinical need that cannot be met by an available FDA-approved product. Availability is not guaranteed and is determined on a case-by-case basis during your visit.
How quickly can I start treatment?
Most patients are able to schedule a same-day appointment, available 8am to 8pm ET every day of the year including weekends and holidays. If prescription treatment is appropriate, your provider will send a prescription to your selected pharmacy. Medication availability and timing vary.
Do I need an in-person visit to get weight support medication?
Not always. Many patients can be fully evaluated and treated through an online consultation. If a provider determines in-person care is needed, they will let you know and help guide you to the appropriate next step. You will not be charged if we cannot complete your care online.
Where will my prescription be sent?
You choose your pharmacy during your consultation. We send prescriptions electronically to any licensed pharmacy, including your community pharmacy or major chains. Many local pharmacies offer home delivery directly to your door by request.
Do you require a monthly subscription?
No. We are telemedicine-first, not subscription-first. You schedule care when you need it or when your provider recommends a follow-up. No required memberships to access our telehealth services.
Is this visit HSA or FSA eligible?
Yes. MyPhysician360 consultations are HSA and FSA eligible. Your visit cost is reimbursable through your Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account, making this accessible through your existing health benefits even without insurance.
